Make the Background of a Photo White

You do not need Photoshop to make a photo background white. This free tool does it automatically — on your phone or computer, right in your browser.

How to make a background white without Photoshop

  1. Open this page on any deviceNothing to install — works on Android, iPhone, Windows and Mac.
  2. Upload the photoThe AI separates the subject from the background on your device.
  3. Download the white versionThe white fill is applied automatically. Save as JPG or PNG.

Photoshop vs this tool

In Photoshop the workflow is: Select Subject, refine the mask around tricky edges, add a white fill layer underneath, flatten and export. Five minutes if you know the software well, much longer if you don’t — and the mobile experience is worse. Here the same result takes one upload, and difficult edges are handled by switching to Quality mode instead of hand-refining a mask. For high-volume batch product work a desktop pipeline can still make sense; for everything else this is faster and free.

Why “brightening” the background never works

A common shortcut is cranking exposure or levels until the wall behind you looks white. It ruins the photo: the subject gets overexposed along its edges, shadows go grey instead of white, and marketplaces and passport offices can tell. Replacing the background entirely — which is what this tool does — keeps the subject untouched and makes the background mathematically uniform.

Tips for the cleanest result

Use even lighting

Bright, diffused light lets the AI trace contours accurately — especially around fine details.

Contrast helps

When the subject differs from its backdrop, separation gets even more precise. Any plain-ish surface works.

Keep it sharp

Lock focus on the subject. Clear edges mean cleaner cutouts and zero retouching afterwards.

Common questions

Can I do this on my phone?

Yes — the tool runs in the mobile browser. On the first run it downloads the AI model, which takes a moment on slow connections; after that it is cached.

Will it work if my background is dark or black?

Yes. The AI detects the subject, not the background color — dark, bright, cluttered or plain all work. See also change background to white.

How do I make the background white but keep a soft shadow?

Download the transparent PNG and add a soft drop shadow in any design tool — that gives you full control over the shadow’s direction and strength on the white canvas.

Is the white really pure white?

Yes — the default fill is exactly #FFFFFF (RGB 255,255,255), which is what marketplaces mean by “pure white”.
